Today, Tuesday 18 October, at the headquarters of the Department of Rural Development and Environment of the Navarra Region in Pamplona (Spain), a training day organised by the project partners ACR+ together with ArsAmbiente and ARC targeted to local authorities and waste service managers. During the workshop, the concepts of PAYT and KAYT will be introduced, and the results of the pilots implemented thanks to the Life REthinkWASTE project will be presented.
The dynamic and fair tariff, also known as PAYT (Pay-as-you-throw, pay for what you throw) is based on the ‘polluter pays’ principle. It applies a dynamic tax based on the actual amount of waste generated and provides an effective incentive to improve the collection of recyclable waste and to reduce unsorted waste. The aim of the dynamic tariff – PAYT is to provide an economic incentive for prevention, reuse, and better waste separation and to increase users’ responsibility.
KAYT (know-as-you-throw) is an innovative concept aimed at reducing unsorted waste and increasing separate collection through a knowledge-based and persuasive approach. The idea is that citizens’ waste separation habits can be improved through continuous and adequate information, social media, apps, and gamification.
The goal is to increase separate waste collection, reduce per capita waste and increase the recovery of sorted waste while reducing the average household waste tax bill!
