The first step in the project was taken online, through a meeting with the press and an online videoconference on the Municipality’s Facebook channel available to all citizens. Thus, started in Bitetto, a town with 12,000 inhabitants in the province of Bari, the REthinkWASTE project co-financed by the EU LIFE Programme and carried out by a consortium of 11 partners from 4 countries (Italy, Spain, Belgium and Denmark).
The aim of the initiative is to develop, test and disseminate among local authorities’ an innovative model for the management of urban waste based on the PAYT (“Pay-as-you-throw”) – KAYT (“Know-as-you-throw”) approach, to increase the quantity and quality of differentiated waste collection through the motivation and awareness of citizens.
This methodological approach is currently tested in 4 pilot areas: in Italy, as well as in Bitetto, in Varese and Bassano del Grappa, in Spain in Sant Just Desvern (Catalonia).
In Bitetto, the KAYT system has in fact been adopted since 2020.
The topics of the presentation were the project contents, objectives and methodology. And, above all, to place the active and informed participation of citizens at the centre of every LIFE-REthinkWASTE activity, right from its first step.
